Fuel your Body by Shopping at the Farmers Market

One of the best parts of spring and summer, from a wellness perspective, is shopping at a local farmers market. There you will find lots of fresh vegetables and fruits as well as other food products. If you can, shopping directly from a farmer will not only support your local economy, it will help you be a bit healthier too. Fresh food tastes better meaning you’ll want to eat it and less will go to waste. Plus, food loses nutrients over time, so the closer to picking you consume it, the more nutritious it is.

Here are 3 tips to get the most out of your shopping trip:

Visit Early

To get the best selection, go early. Since farmers can’t bring an unlimited supply of products, the early bird tends to get the worm. Additionally, it tends to be less crowded earlier, so you can see all that’s available more easily.

Research What’s In-Season

Some farmers markets require sellers to also be the producers of the goods they sell, aka they must grow the food themselves. However, some do not. So do your research as to what’s in-season in your area to make sure you are getting local food.

Talk with the Farmer

Want to know how something was grown or how you should prepare it? Just ask! Farmers are a wealth of knowledge and they want to share it with you. Many times small farmers can’t afford certifications, like organic, but use the same principles. Asking questions helps you find a farm that aligns with your values.
